Search results for “cheapest shipping from China to the UK” or “how long does shipping from China to the UK take” often contain outdated information.
The CSL-developed engine uses 15+ years of China–Europe shipping experience and our own shipment records. The rates and transit times come from cargo we have moved on China–UK lanes. Answer four quick questions about cargo type, size and destination. The engine compares live 2026 market rates for express, air, ocean LCL and FCL. It then recommends the best fit, with cost ranges and the reason for the choice.
Fill in weight, volume, cargo type and destination above to get a recommendation.
Sensitive cargo (batteries, liquids, powders, chemicals or food) needs DG handling and cannot be priced automatically. Rates depend on the cargo class, MSDS and carrier approval, so each shipment is quoted separately.
Request a quotePick an origin port in China and a destination port in the UK. The map traces the sailing route, and the card shows 2026 market rates and current transit times from sailing schedules.
Transit time depends mostly on the route the vessel takes. With Red Sea risk keeping Suez closed to standard services, every major carrier now uses the Cape of Good Hope route. Shanghai to Felixstowe takes 40–48 days.
Express services are the only faster option. Since 2026, CMA CGM and Sea Legend have cut the journey to around 20 days by sailing the Red Sea or the Arctic. Felixstowe, Southampton, London Gateway and Liverpool handle nearly all container volume from China on this route.
Standard services now use the Cape of Good Hope route and take 40–48 days. CSL offers two faster services. Service one is the New China–UK Express Shipping. Since 2026, CMA CGM and Sea Legend have operated express services from China to Felixstowe in around 20 days. These are the only ships that still sail the Red Sea. Sea Legend’s polar service also crosses the Arctic, while all other services go around Africa. This route takes roughly half the transit time of a Cape route and is two weeks faster than the standard service.
Service two is cross-border trucking. Express trucks operate door-to-door through the China–Europe road corridor in about 18–25 days. They do not depend on sailing schedules or port waiting times. They depart daily from South and East China. The chart below compares every mode on the China–UK route on the same timescale.
Door-to-door transit times from China to the UK. Air and courier times include pickup and customs. Ocean times include sailing plus clearance and delivery.
Pick an origin airport in China and a destination gateway in the UK. The selector compares air freight rates per kilo across the three standard weight breaks.
Heathrow (LHR) takes direct all-cargo flights from Shanghai and Shenzhen and clears in 1–2 days. Stansted (STN) is London’s all-cargo gateway for integrator traffic and prices in the same tier. Manchester (MAN) and East Midlands (EMA), Britain’s biggest dedicated freight hub, usually connect through a European gateway and add one day.
Before comparing rates, remember that air freight bills on chargeable weight. One CBM is billed as 167 kg.

Freight is only part of your landed cost. Britain has taxed every import from the first pound since January 2021. There is no de minimis exemption and no small-parcel relief. Among the markets we cover, only the US lanes have a harsher tax regime on Chinese goods. The 2026 rules are:
UK-bound sellers get confused about product compliance, not customs. Many online guides are years out of date. The 2026 rule is simpler than most guides suggest:
Ninety percent of your price is explained by four variables: mode, volume, Red Sea routing and the week you book. The table below uses 2026 market reference rates from our China–UK route data. Use it to verify any quote before you commit:
| Shipping Mode | Billing Unit | 2026 Reference Rate | What You Should Know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean FCL — 20GP | Per container | $1,500 – $2,600 | Rates are port-to-port. Felixstowe and London Gateway have the lowest rates. The 2026 rates include Cape routing, and express services cost extra. |
| Ocean FCL — 40GP | Per container | $2,400 – $4,200 | This is the most common container size. Below about 13–15 CBM of cargo, LCL is usually the better choice. Above that volume, book the full container. |
| Ocean FCL — 40HQ | Per container | $2,500 – $4,300 | The 40HQ has the same freight rate as a 40GP and adds about 15% more cubic volume. It offers the best per-CBM value for light, bulky cargo. |
| Ocean LCL | Per CBM | $110 – $165 all-in | Rates use weight or volume, whichever is greater: 1 CBM = 1,000 kg. Includes origin consolidation and destination CFS handling at Felixstowe or Southampton. |
| Air freight | Per kg (chargeable) | $2.80 – $5.00 | Rates are airport-to-airport. One CBM bills as 167 kg. Rates step down at the +100 / +300 / +500 kg weight breaks. At comparable weights, it is cheaper than on the US route. |
| Express courier | Per kg (chargeable) | $4.50 – $10.00 | This service is door-to-door in 3–6 days. One CBM bills as 200 kg. Parcels under 21 kg cost extra per box. |
| Sea DDP service | Per kg | $2.00 – $2.80 | The all-in door-to-door rate includes duty, 20% VAT, clearance and delivery. There is nothing to pay on arrival. Transit takes 33–50 days. |
| Air DDP service | Per kg | $5.50 – $7.50 | This is an all-in door-to-door rate with duty and VAT included. The 5–10 day option is between air freight and courier. |
These are reference rates, not a price list. Ocean and air rates move weekly. The rate that matters is the one on your written quote. Three factors drive most of the price movement on this route:
The rate for the move itself: a full container (FCL), per-CBM rate (LCL) or chargeable kilogram (air). After the Red Sea diversions, this is the invoice item that changes most.
Red Sea risk premiums, fuel (BAF), peak-season (PSS), congestion and security fees. Allow 15–30% on top of base freight, and more when carriers divert around the Cape.
Terminal handling (THC), pickup and export clearance in China. UK THC, CFS handling and port fees apply at Felixstowe, Southampton or London Gateway. These charges are billed per container or per CBM. On small shipments, they can exceed base freight.
20% VAT on CIF value plus duty, CDS entry and trucking to the final door. Register for Postponed VAT Accounting. With PVA, the VAT never leaves your account. DDP rates include these costs. FCL rates itemize them.
Transit time is the part that varies most between quotes. A “35-day” service means 35 days on the water, not 35 days to your door. The table compares port-to-port or airport-to-airport time with door-to-door time for every major mode:
| Shipping Mode | Transit time (Port / Airport) | Door to Door | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean FCL — via Cape of Good Hope | 40–48 days sailing | 44–55 days | This is the current standard service. With Red Sea risk keeping Suez closed, every major carrier on the China–UK service uses the Cape of Good Hope route. Transit is 10–14 days longer than the old Suez sailings. Cargo from South China arrives 1–2 days faster than cargo from Shanghai. |
| Ocean FCL — Express service (CMA CGM / Sea Legend) | Around 20 days sailing | 24–28 days | This is the fastest ocean service. It sails the Red Sea or the Arctic while all other services go around Africa. These services cost more than standard sailings. Availability is seasonal and limited, so book weeks in advance. |
| Cross-border trucking | Daily departures | 18–25 days | This is CSL’s second express service. Express trucks provide door-to-door delivery through the China–Europe road corridor. They do not depend on sailing schedules or port waiting times. Loads range from a few pallets to a full trailer. |
| Ocean LCL | +3–7 days vs FCL | 37–52 days | Consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at the destination CFS add about half a week at each end. |
| Air freight | 1–2 days (LHR/STN) · 2–4 days (MAN/EMA) | 3–6 days | Direct all-cargo flights from PVG, CAN and SZX reach Heathrow in 11–13 hours of flying. Regional gateways connect via a European hub. |
| Express courier | — | 3–6 days | This is the fastest door-to-door option. The per-box limit is about 65 kg. Heavier cartons must travel by air or ocean. |
| Sea DDP service | — | 33–50 days | Duty and VAT are paid when you book. There is no separate clearance step for you. |
| Air DDP service | — | 5–10 days | It clears customs and delivers to the door. It is the fast option when courier costs too much and ocean is too slow. |
| Rail freight (China–Europe) | 18–22 days terminal-to-terminal | 22–28 days | On the transit-time chart, rail is between air and ocean. Cargo travels from Xi’an or Yiwu to Duisburg, then continues by truck to the UK under T1 transit. The Eurohub rebuild at Barking will restore direct trains through the Channel Tunnel to London. |
The main routing decision for ocean freight to the UK is Cape versus Suez. Current standard services use the Cape. While Red Sea risk keeps Suez closed to standard services, every major carrier uses the Cape of Good Hope route. The Shanghai–Felixstowe voyage takes 40–48 days. Only the express services still use the Red Sea or cross the Arctic, and they arrive in around 20 days. Ask for the current route in writing. A calendar average may not match the actual routing.
Door-to-door transport has four stages, whichever mode you use:
| Stage | Ocean FCL | Air Freight | What Can Delay It |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pickup & origin handling | 2–5 days | 1–2 days | Delays can result from container or flight capacity, factory readiness or booking deadlines. |
| Transit time (Sea / Air) | 40–48 days (Cape) | 1–4 days | Standard services use the Cape of Good Hope route. Only the 20-day express services sail the Red Sea or the Arctic. Cargo from South China arrives 1–2 days faster than cargo from Shanghai. |
| UK customs clearance (CDS) | 1–3 days | Same day – 1 day | Entries file electronically with a GB EORI. Delays are almost always caused by a missing EORI or the wrong commodity code, not an inspection. |
| Release & final delivery | 2–5 days | 1–2 days | The main delays are port collection times, CFS deconsolidation processing and warehouse appointments. UK trucking is quick once cargo leaves the port. |

The China–Europe rail service connects Xi’an or Yiwu with Duisburg, Germany, in 18–22 days. The final leg from Duisburg to the UK is changing:
Today: most China-to-UK rail cargo is trucked from Duisburg through the Channel Tunnel to Britain under the EU’s T1 transit rules. Trucking adds extra days. It also adds paperwork at both the origin and destination.
From 2026: Barking’s Eurohub freight terminal will undergo a £15 million rebuild. The rebuilt terminal will restore scheduled container trains through the Channel Tunnel to London. It is where the Yiwu–London block trains arrived in 2017. Once service begins, one train can carry cargo from Xi’an to Barking without a separate truck journey.
