If you searched for “cheapest shipping from China to Australia,” you may have found outdated blog posts. The same applies to “how long does shipping from China to Australia take.”
We built this engine from 15+ years of CSL China–Australia shipping experience and our own shipment records. It uses real rates and transit times from cargo we have moved. Answer four questions about cargo type, size and destination region: Eastern Australia, South Australia & Tasmania, or Western Australia & NT. The engine compares live 2026 market rates for express, air, ocean LCL and FCL. It then recommends the best fit and shows the cost range and reasoning.

Sensitive cargo (batteries, liquids, powders, chemicals or food) needs DG handling and cannot be priced automatically. Rates depend on the cargo class, MSDS and carrier approval, so each shipment is quoted separately.

Australia is a three-sided market, so cargo flows split between the east, south and west coasts. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane carry most east-coast volume. Adelaide serves the south, while Fremantle is reached via the Sunda Strait. It is the closest fast gateway to China at 11–19 days.
Central China origins (Shanghai, Ningbo) reach Sydney in 18–24 days and Fremantle in 14–19. South China runs 2 days faster. North China adds 2–3 days.
Pick an origin airport in China. The table compares per-kilo air freight rates across the three standard weight breaks. Freight flights land at Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL) or Brisbane (BNE) on the east coast, or Perth (PER) in the west.
Direct flights take 10–11 hours. Cargo typically clears within 1–2 days through the ICS.
Air freight bills on chargeable weight. One CBM is billed as 167 kg. Perth rates run about $0.3/kg above the east coast because fewer direct flights serve Perth.

Freight is only part of your landed cost, and tax is only one border cost. Under ChAFTA, 95%+ of Chinese-origin goods enter Australia duty-free with a Certificate of Origin. The tax side is a single flat 10% GST. The real challenge for new importers is Australia’s biosecurity regime, not the tax. Here is what applies in 2026.
Australia is Amazon’s fastest-growing established marketplace. Chinese sellers dominate its new-seller signups. But the border works differently from the US FBA model. Australia requires someone to be legally responsible for the import. A foreign company without an Australian entity cannot simply be that someone. Four things decide whether your first container sails smoothly or sits at the dock.
The answer depends on five variables: mode, volume, origin coast, destination region and the week you book. Together these explain 90% of your price. Below are 2026 market reference rates from our own China–Australia route data. Use them to verify any quote before you commit.
| Shipping Mode | Billing Unit | 2026 Reference Rate | What You Should Know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean FCL — 20GP | Per container | $1,500 – $2,000 | Port-to-port. South China (Shenzhen, Guangzhou) has the lowest rates and weekly direct sailings. North China costs $50–150 more. Adelaide and Fremantle are cheaper than the east-coast ports. |
| Ocean FCL — 40GP | Per container | $2,500 – $4,000 | The 40GP is the most common container, but LCL usually costs less below about 13–15 CBM. Above that volume, book the full container. |
| Ocean FCL — 40HQ | Per container | $2,800 – $4,000 | It uses the same container size as a 40GP and provides about 15% more cubic volume. It offers the lowest cost per CBM for light, bulky cargo. |
| Ocean LCL | Per CBM | $60 – $125 all-in | Billing uses 1 CBM = 1,000 kg, whichever is greater. East-coast CFS handling costs about $60–$80, while Fremantle costs about $85. Adelaide costs about $125 after feeder connections. The rate includes origin consolidation and destination CFS handling. |
| Air freight | Per kg (chargeable) | $2.30 – $4.50 | Airport-to-airport into Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL) or Brisbane (BNE). One CBM bills as 167 kg. Rates fall at the +100 / +300 / +500 kg weight breaks. Perth (PER) costs about $0.3/kg more because fewer direct flights serve the city. |
| Express courier | Per kg (chargeable) | $4.40 – $9.50 | Door-to-door delivery takes 3–6 days. One CBM bills as 200 kg, and parcels under 21 kg cost extra per box. |
| Sea DDP line | Per kg | $2.50 – $3.10 | All-in door-to-door: 10% GST, ChAFTA duty (usually zero with a certificate of origin), clearance and delivery. Transit takes 20–42 days by region. Fremantle is fastest and Tasmania slowest. |
| Air DDP line | Per kg | $7.50 – $8.50 | All-in door-to-door with GST prepaid. This is the 3–7 day option between air and courier. |
These are reference rates, not a price list. Ocean and air rates move weekly. The number that matters is the one on your written quote. Three factors drive most of the price change on this route.
The market rate for the move itself. Billing is per container (FCL), per CBM (LCL) or per chargeable kg (air). Direct east-coast sailings set the benchmark. Adelaide and Tasmania use feeder ships from Melbourne or Sydney. Adelaide rates are lower when demand is light.
Fuel (BAF), peak season (PSS), congestion and GRI increases apply. Security and documentation fees also apply. Budget 15–30% above base freight. The peak runs before Chinese New Year and from August to October.
Origin costs include THC, pickup and export clearance in China. Destination costs include Australian THC, CFS handling and port fees. These are charged per container or CBM. Sydney and Melbourne add infrastructure surcharges.
This includes 10% GST on CIF value plus any duty, customs brokerage and local trucking. ChAFTA duty is usually zero. DDP rates bundle these costs. FCL quotes itemize them.
Transit time is where quotes differ most, and small details matter. An “18-day” service means 18 days on the water, not to your door. Here is every major mode side by side, from port or airport and then door-to-door.
| Shipping Mode | Transit time (Port / Airport) | Door to Door | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean FCL — South China | 11–24 days sailing | 16–26 days | Shenzhen and Guangzhou have direct weekly sailings. Transit takes 16–22 days to Sydney, 17–23 to Melbourne and 18–24 to Brisbane. Fremantle takes 11–16 days via the Sunda Strait. |
| Ocean FCL — Central China | 14–28 days sailing | 18–32 days | Shanghai and Ningbo: Sydney 18–24 days, Melbourne 19–25, Brisbane 20–26, Adelaide 22–28, Fremantle 14–19. The reference origin for the matrix above. |
| Ocean FCL — North China | 16–31 days sailing | 21–36 days | Qingdao, Tianjin, Dalian — add 2–3 days and $50–150 versus Shanghai on the same destination. |
| Ocean FCL — Yangtze River | 19–34 days sailing | 24–40 days | Chongqing and river ports barge down to Shanghai first, then transship — the slowest but cheapest route for inland factories. |
| Ocean LCL | +3–5 days vs FCL | 18–38 days | Consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at the destination CFS add roughly half a week on each side. |
| Air freight | 1–3 days | 2–4 days | Direct freight flights from PVG, SZX or CAN land at SYD / MEL / BNE in 10–11 hours. Most Perth cargo transfers through Sydney or Singapore. ICS clearance usually runs same-day. |
| Express courier | — | 3–6 days | Fastest door-to-door. Per-box limit sits around 65 kg — heavier cartons must fly or sail. |
| Sea DDP line | — | 20–42 days | Tax and clearance are settled at booking. You do not handle a separate import step. |
| Air DDP line | — | 3–7 days | Clears and delivers to the door — the fast option when courier is too expensive and ocean is too slow. |
One decision matters more than any other on ocean freight to Australia: which destination port. The east coast (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane) has the most direct sailings. Adelaide has fewer direct sailings, so some containers transfer through Melbourne on a feeder ship and arrive 3–6 days later. Fremantle is 4–5 days faster than Sydney despite serving the far side of the country. The Sunda Strait route is 1,500 nm shorter. Sending WA-bound cargo through Sydney to save on freight adds a 3,000 km truck journey. Whatever the mode, your door-to-door journey has four separate stages.
| Stage | Ocean FCL | Air Freight | What Can Delay It |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pickup & origin handling | 2–5 days | 1–2 days | Container or flight space availability, factory readiness, booking deadlines. |
| Transit time (Sea / Air) | 11–31 days by origin & destination | 1–3 days | Direct vs transship routing; Yangtze River origins add the barge leg; Fremantle is 4–5 days faster than the east coast. |
| Australia customs clearance (ICS) | 1–2 days | Same day | Entries file electronically through the Integrated Cargo System; most cargo clears in 1–2 days. Delays are almost always documentation or a biosecurity hold — not duty. |
| Release & final delivery | 1–3 days | 1–2 days | Terminal appointment slots, CFS deconsolidation queue, warehouse booking. East-coast trucking between Sydney–Melbourne–Brisbane is frequent and fast. |
Unlike the US (nine gateway choices) or Japan (seven ports on four islands), Australia asks a practical question: which coast, which market? Five container gateways cover the continent. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane serve the east, Adelaide serves the south, and Fremantle serves the west. Sydney, Melbourne and Perth airports handle air cargo. Choose the gateway closest to the final door. Australia’s size makes the wrong port a 3–5 day, $1,500+ trucking mistake. Transit times below are port-to-port from Shanghai. Use the matrix above to compare another origin.
Five container gateways cover Australia's major markets. Select a gateway to compare transit time, cargo fit and regional coverage, or click a point on the map.
NSW and ACT delivery, including Sydney's distribution centers.
VIC, SA and Tasmania delivery through rail and Bass Strait ferry connections.
Queensland delivery, including Brisbane fulfillment-center airfreight overflow.
South Australia delivery and wine-region or mining supply.
Western Australia and Northern Territory delivery, including Perth and mining-region supply.
The selector compares the five container gateways by transit time, role and regional coverage. Sydney, Melbourne and Perth airports handle air cargo separately.
The east-coast triangle (Sydney–Melbourne–Brisbane) handles roughly 85% of national container volume. Adelaide and Fremantle each anchor their own state. The east-coast ports operate more like a coastal feeder network than separate gateways. Darwin remains a bulk and project-cargo port. It is not a container gateway.
Everything above assumes cargo moving out of China, but the same vessels also sail back. Australia to China is a business of its own. It includes Australian minerals, wine and agricultural products for mainland distribution. It also includes health and consumer goods for China’s cross-border e-commerce, stock rebalancing and consumer returns. As the backhaul leg of the China–Australia route, ocean rates often run below the headhaul you saw above. The real work sits in China’s import regime, not the freight. Here are 2026 reference rates.
| Shipping Mode | Billing Unit | 2026 Reference Rate | What You Should Know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean FCL — 20GP | Per container | $500 – $800 | These vessels return on the same route. Rates are typically $50–100 below the China–Australia headhaul, but regional Australian ports cost more. |
| Ocean FCL — 40GP / 40HQ | Per container | $850 – $1,400 | Same slot economics as the 20GP with double the floor space. Below ~13–15 CBM, LCL usually still wins in this direction too. |
| Ocean LCL | Per CBM | $75 – $110 all-in | Billing uses 1 CBM = 1,000 kg, whichever is greater. Cargo consolidates at an Australian CFS and deconsolidates at a CFS in China. |
| Air freight | Per kg (chargeable) | $2.00 – $4.00 | Sydney and Melbourne connect to Pudong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Beijing. Direct freight flights take 10–11 hours. One CBM bills as 167 kg. |
| Express courier | Per kg (chargeable) | $4.00 – $9.00 | Door-to-door delivery takes 3–7 days. One CBM bills as 200 kg, and per-box weight limits are about 65–70 kg. |
Transit times mirror the northbound route almost exactly. The same vessels call at the same ports in the opposite direction. What changes is the destination-side clock. China’s port, airport and customs handling takes longer than Australia’s 1–2 day ICS clearance. Cross-border e-commerce goods also route through bonded warehouses with their own declaration path. Door-to-door numbers therefore stretch accordingly.
| Shipping Mode | Transit time (Port / Airport) | Door to Door | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean FCL — into South China | 11–24 days sailing | 16–26 days | Direct loops from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle into Yantian, Shekou, Nansha and Xiamen. |
| Ocean FCL — into Central China | 14–28 days sailing | 19–33 days | Shanghai and Ningbo; the reverse of the headhaul reference lane. |
| Ocean FCL — into North China | 16–31 days sailing | 21–36 days | Qingdao, Tianjin, Dalian — fewer direct sailings than the Sydney and Melbourne loops. |
| Ocean LCL | +3–5 days vs FCL | 21–40 days | Consolidation in Australia and deconsolidation at the destination CFS add roughly half a week on each side. |
| Air freight | 1–3 days | 3–5 days | Freight flights leave SYD and MEL for PVG, CAN and SZX. China customs clearance at major airports takes 1–2 days. |
| Express courier | — | 3–7 days | Fastest door-to-door for parcels; the practical limit per box sits around 65–70 kg. |
