If you’ve searched for “cheapest shipping from China to Japan” or “how long does shipping from China to Japan take”, much of the information available online may be outdated.
The recommendation engine uses CSL shipment records and more than 15 years of China–Asia shipping experience. It compares 2026 market rates and transit times for express, air, ocean LCL and FCL. Answer four questions about your cargo type, size and destination region — Kanto, Kansai & Chubu, or Kyushu. The engine then recommends the most suitable option with realistic cost ranges and the reasoning behind the recommendation.
Fill in weight, volume, cargo type and destination above to get a recommendation.
Sensitive cargo (batteries, liquids, powders, chemicals or food) needs DG handling and cannot be priced automatically. Rates depend on the cargo class, MSDS and carrier approval, so each shipment is quoted separately.

Japan is a multi-gateway market: Tokyo and Yokohama serve Kanto, Nagoya serves Chubu, Osaka and Kobe serve Kansai, and Moji is the western gateway into Kyushu.
Central China origins (Shanghai, Ningbo) reach Kanto in 4–6 days and Kansai in 3–5; South and North China origins generally take 5–8 days; Yangtze River origins are barged to Shanghai first and usually take 8–14 days.
Pick an origin airport in China and compare air freight from China to Japan per-kilo rates across the three standard weight breaks — all-cargo flights land at Tokyo Narita (NRT) for Kanto or Osaka Kansai (KIX) for the west.
Direct all-cargo flights cover the 2–4 hour flight daily, and cargo typically clears within 1–2 days through NACCS.
One rule to remember before comparing: air freight bills on chargeable weight — one CBM is billed as 167 kg.

Freight is only part of your landed cost. The good news for importers: Japan applies no punitive tariffs on Chinese goods at all — after the US and Canada lanes, the tax side of this route feels almost too easy. Here’s what actually applies in 2026:
Japan is Amazon’s third-largest marketplace, and Chinese sellers dominate its new-seller signups. But the border works differently from the US FBA model you may know: Japan requires someone to be legally responsible for the import, and a foreign company without a Japanese entity can’t simply be that someone. Four things decide whether your first container sails smoothly or sits at the dock:
The import process differs from the US FBA model: Japan requires a legally responsible importer. A foreign company without a Japanese entity cannot act in that role. The four requirements below determine whether the first shipment clears customs without delay:
The honest answer: it depends — but not mysteriously. Ninety percent of your price is explained by four variables: mode, volume, origin coast, and the week you book. Below are 2026 market reference rates from our own China–Japan lane data, so you can verify any quote before you commit to it:
| Shipping Mode | Billing Unit | 2026 Reference Rate | What You Should Know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean FCL — 20GP | Per container | $230 – $550 | Port-to-port. Central China (Shanghai, Ningbo) has the lowest rates and near-daily direct sailings. Cargo that relays through Taiwan costs more and takes longer. |
| Ocean FCL — 40GP | Per container | $420 – $1,000 | The most common container type. For shipments below roughly 13–15 CBM, LCL is usually more economical; above that volume, a full container generally costs less. |
| Ocean FCL — 40HQ | Per container | $430 – $1,050 | It occupies the same container slot as a 40GP but provides roughly 15% more cubic volume, lowering the cost per CBM for light, bulky cargo. |
| Ocean LCL | Per CBM | $40 – $90 all-in | W/M: 1 CBM = 1,000 kg, whichever is greater. Includes origin consolidation and destination CFS handling. |
| Air freight | Per kg (chargeable) | $1.30 – $3.50 | Airport-to-airport into Narita (NRT) or Kansai (KIX). One CBM is billed as 167 kg; rates step down at the +100 / +300 / +500 kg weight breaks. One of the cheapest air lanes out of China. |
| Express courier | Per kg (chargeable) | $2.80 – $5.50 | Door-to-door in 2–4 days. One CBM is billed as 200 kg; parcels under 21 kg cost extra per box. |
| Sea DDP line | Per kg | $1.40 – $1.90 | All-in door-to-door: 10% consumption tax, clearance and delivery included. No payment is required on arrival. Transit time is 5–10 days. |
| Air DDP line | Per kg | $3.80 – $5.00 | All-in door-to-door with consumption tax included. The 2–5 day mid-speed option between air and courier. |
These are reference rates, not a price list. Ocean and air rates change weekly; the applicable rate is the one stated in your written quote.
Three factors account for most price changes on this lane:
The market rate for the move itself: a container slot (FCL), per-CBM (LCL) or chargeable kg (air). On this ultra-short lane it’s the cheapest line on the invoice — not the biggest.
Fuel (BAF), peak season (PSS), congestion and GRI increases, security and documentation fees. Budget 15–30% on top of base freight — more before CNY and Golden Week.
THC, pickup and export clearance in China; Japan THC, CFS handling and port fees — per container or CBM. Japanese terminal costs are among the world’s highest.
10% consumption tax on CIF value plus any duty, customs brokerage, local trucking to the final door or the Amazon fulfillment center. Bundled into DDP rates; itemized on FCL.
Transit time varies by service and mode. A “4-day” service means four days on the water, not four days to final delivery. The table below compares linehaul and door-to-door transit times for each major mode:
| Shipping Mode | Transit time (Port / Airport) | Door to Door | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean FCL — Central China | 3–6 days sailing | 6–10 days | Shanghai and Ningbo run near-daily direct services into Tokyo Bay, Ise Bay and Osaka Bay — the fastest ocean service on this lane. |
| Ocean FCL — South China | 3–8 days sailing | 8–12 days | Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Xiamen and Hong Kong offer frequent services, but the route crosses a longer section of the East China Sea. |
| Ocean FCL — North China | 3–6 days sailing | 8–12 days | Qingdao, Tianjin and Dalian offer direct services to Kanto and Kyushu (Moji). |
| Ocean FCL — Yangtze River | 8–14 days sailing | 12–18 days | Cargo barges from Chongqing and other river ports to Shanghai, then transships — the slowest and lowest-cost route for inland factories. |
| Ocean LCL | +3–5 days vs FCL | 7–12 days | Consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at the destination CFS add about half a week at each end. |
| Air freight | 1–2 days | 2–4 days | Direct all-cargo flights take 2–4 hours into NRT or KIX; NACCS clearance is normally completed the same day. |
| Express courier | — | 2–4 days | The fastest door-to-door option, with a per-box limit of about 65 kg. Heavier cartons require air or ocean freight. |
| Sea DDP line | — | 5–10 days | Tax and clearance are settled at booking; no separate import process is required. |
| Air DDP line | — | 2–5 days | A faster DDP option with tax and clearance included. |
The choice between direct and transship service has the greatest effect on ocean transit time to Japan.
Direct intra-Asia loops from Shanghai, Ningbo, Qingdao or Shenzhen run 3–8 days on the water. Lower-cost bookings with major carriers often transship via Busan or Kaohsiung, adding 2–4 days and increasing missed-connection risk.
Door-to-door service consists of four separate stages:
| Stage | Ocean FCL | Air Freight | What Can Delay It |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pickup & origin handling | 2–5 days | 1–2 days | Container or flight space availability, factory readiness, booking cut-offs. |
| Transit time (Sea / Air) | 3–14 days by origin | 1–2 days | Direct vs transship routing; Yangtze River origins add the barge leg. |
| Japan customs clearance (NACCS) | Hours – 1 day | Same day | Entries are filed electronically through NACCS, and most cargo clears the same day. Delays are almost always documentation — wrong HS code, missing importer data — not inspection. |
| Release & final delivery | 1–3 days | 1–2 days | Terminal appointment slots, CFS deconsolidation queue, warehouse booking. Japan’s domestic trucking network is efficient once cargo is released. |
Gateway selection in Japan depends on the island and market the cargo serves. Seven gateways cover the country: Tokyo Bay for Kanto, Nagoya for Chubu, Osaka and Kobe for Kansai, Moji for Kyushu, and Narita and Kansai airports for air cargo.
Select the gateway closest to the final delivery point; because Japan extends north to south, selecting the wrong port can add 2–3 days of trucking. Use the gateway selector to compare port-to-port transit times from Shanghai and the market each port serves.
Seven gateways cover Japan's main consumer and industrial markets. Select a gateway to compare transit time, cargo fit and regional coverage, or click a point on the map.
Kanto consumer distribution and Tokyo Bay area warehouses.
Container cargo for Kanto and Koshinetsu industrial and consumer markets.
Automotive parts and manufacturing cargo moving through the Chubu belt.
The Kansai twin ports: Osaka handles consumer goods, and Kobe handles general and bulk cargo for Kansai and western Honshu delivery.
Kyushu-bound cargo that needs the shortest ocean transit on the lane.
Kanto air freight and express shipments that need same-day NACCS clearance.
Kansai and western Japan air freight, express and high-value cargo.
China–Japan services are short and frequent. Every gateway above receives multiple direct sailings per week from China, giving this lane more flexibility for late bookings than most other major routes from China.
Japan-to-China shipping uses the same vessels in the opposite direction, but it has its own operating requirements. Typical cargo includes Japanese capital equipment and automotive parts for mainland factories, brand-name consumer goods supplying China’s cross-border e-commerce, stock rebalancing, and consumer returns.
As the backhaul leg, ocean rates are often lower than the headhaul shown above. The main complexity is China’s import regime rather than ocean freight. 2026 reference rates:
| Shipping Mode | Billing Unit | 2026 Reference Rate | What You Should Know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean FCL — 20GP | Per container | $150 – $500 | The backhaul service uses the same vessels shown above — typically $50–150 lower than the China–Japan headhaul. Regional ports in Japan cost more. |
| Ocean FCL — 40GP / 40HQ | Per container | $250 – $800 | The same container slot as the 20GP with double the floor space. Below roughly 13–15 CBM, LCL is usually more economical in this direction as well. |
| Ocean LCL | Per CBM | $30 – $70 all-in | W/M: 1 CBM = 1,000 kg, whichever is greater. Consolidates at a Japanese CFS, deconsolidates at the destination CFS in China. |
| Air freight | Per kg (chargeable) | $1.20 – $3.00 | Narita and Kansai to Pudong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen or Beijing. Direct all-cargo flights take 3–4 hours; one CBM is billed as 167 kg. |
| Express courier | Per kg (chargeable) | $2.50 – $5.50 | Door-to-door in 2–5 days. One CBM is billed as 200 kg; per-box weight limits are typically about 65–70 kg. |
Transit times are similar to the China-to-Japan lane because the same vessels call at the same ports in the opposite direction. Destination processing is the main difference.
China’s port, airport and customs handling generally takes longer than Japan’s same-day NACCS clearance, and cross-border e-commerce goods move through bonded warehouses with a separate declaration process, so door-to-door transit times are longer:
| Shipping Mode | Transit time (Port / Airport) | Door to Door | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean FCL — into South China | 5–8 days sailing | 9–13 days | Direct services from Tokyo Bay, Ise Bay and Osaka Bay into Yantian, Shekou, Nansha and Xiamen. |
| Ocean FCL — into Central China | 3–6 days sailing | 7–11 days | Shanghai and Ningbo offer the shortest transit on this lane, matching the headhaul. |
| Ocean FCL — into North China | 5–8 days sailing | 9–14 days | Qingdao, Tianjin, Dalian — fewer direct sailings than the Kanto loops. |
| Ocean LCL | +3–5 days vs FCL | 10–16 days | Consolidation in Japan and deconsolidation in China add roughly three to five days in total. |
| Air freight | 1–2 days | 3–5 days | NRT / KIX all-cargo flights into PVG, CAN and SZX; China customs clearance at major airports runs 1–2 days. |
| Express courier | — | 2–5 days | The fastest door-to-door option for parcels; the practical per-box limit is about 65–70 kg. |
